Hungry Animal Preschool Fine Motor Skills Game

Fine motor skills are essential when it comes to picking up small objects, holding a pencil when you learn to write and using scissors.  There are lots of great activities you can do with your preschool child to help develop these.  I had great fun making this hungry animal game with my little one and he’s had endless fun feeding his penguin.

What You Need:

  • Cardboard box
  • Paint
  • Small craft pom poms or little pieces of paper scrunched up into balls
  • Scissors or something to stab a hole for the mouth

How To Make a Hungry Animal Game:

  • Use the back of the box and sketch on the design of your animal.  We chose a penguin which was inspired from a keyring we have from Chameleon & Co.   A lion or monster would be good too.

  • Paint your animal on the back of the box.  My little one wanted to get involved too so he painted another box pretty much all grey and said it was an elephant.

  • Once the paint has dried, you can punch a hole for it’s mouth.  Younger kids might need a bigger hole and older preschoolers should be able manage a smaller one.
  • Fill a bowl with small craft pom poms or make your own balls by scrunching up some paper.

  • The fine motor skill development comes into action when your little one has to use their small hand muscles to pick up the pom poms and pop them into the mouth of the hungry animal.
