The Ultimate Guide to Winter Bedding for Maximum Comfort

With Winter upon us and the nights starting to become colder and colder, it may be time to upgrade your bedding to make it Winter-ready. Here are a few of the best tips to remember to ensure your bed is cozy, comfortable, and warm. 

Start with Sheets

The first thing you should start with is to invest in a warm bed sheet. Considering this is the layer you lie on, you want to ensure it is made from a material that not only retains heat, but only stops you from sweating and making you colder. 

Browse stores and Boxing Day bedding sales to find sheets made from either cotton or silk; both of these materials will keep you warm, but are also breathable and will stop your body from overheating. 

The Duvet Inner

For your duvet inner, you have a few options to choose from if you are looking to get a new one; namely, an all-season duvet, a microfiber duvet, and a down duvet. 

All-Season

An all-season inner is one that doesn’t make you too hot during the warmer days, but also stops you from getting too cold during Winter and Autumn. These are typically a great choice for those that live somewhere that don’t get extreme temperatures for large parts of the year. 

Microfiber

A microfiber duvet inner offers the same luxurious feel and softness of a down duvet, but with the added benefit of being hypoallergenic. It will still keep you warm and cozy, but there is less chance, if any chance, of you waking up with an itchy nose or eyes. 

Down

Speaking of down duvet inners, these offer the most comfortable and ultra-luxurious feel compared to other duvet inners. Plus, they are incredible at insulating you and retaining warmth, making them brilliant for the colder months. 

It is important to note, though, that down duvet inners can get a bit too hot during warmer months, so you may want to only use it when it gets very cold. 

Weighted Blanket

A weighted blanket is a great investment for Winter due to the fact that there is less chance of it slipping down or off your bed. Not only is it incredibly cozy, but it encases your body and stops drafts from getting in, keeping you warm throughout the night. 

It is important to note that it can potentially make you feel a bit too enclosed if you have a thick duvet or multiple blankets on already, so it is best to pair it with thinner layers. 

Mattress Topper

A mattress topper is another brilliant way to stop the heat from your body being absorbed by your colder mattress. It is typically a very thin mattress that fits over your regular mattress like a fitted sheet. 

When combined with a warm bed sheet, a mattress topper can be the ideal thing to keep you warm on cold nights, and you may find yourself not needing as many blankets as usual. 

Pillows

For your pillows, it will be a personal choice what type keeps your head and neck the most comfortable, but there is still a factor you need to remember and consider. More often than not, a pillow that gets too hot will become uncomfortable, and during the night, you may end up pushing it aside, and, therefore, sleeping in a position that will cause neck or shoulder strain.

To prevent this, use cotton or silk pillowcases that are soft against your skin, but breathable enough to keep your head cool while you sleep. This will also balance out your body being warmer than usual, and you won’t feel like you are overheating. 

Layering

One of the best ways to stay warm during the Winter when you are sleeping is to layer your blankets. To do this effectively, put a thinner layer under your duvet, instead of on top of it, as the weight of the duvet will stop drafts from getting underneath and making you cold. 

In simple terms, it is best to put your thinner blankets underneath your thicker and heavier ones, as the heavier ones will keep them in place. 

Electric Blanket

If you don’t want to put two or three extra blankets on your bed just to stay warm, you can invest in an electric blanket. Not only are these brilliant at preheating your bed before you get into bed, but many modern ones have timers. 

Typically, you can leave it on for one, three, six, or nine hours, and it will switch off by itself. This means you can comfortably fall asleep and there is no chance of you overheating in the night. 

Bed Skirts

Finally, a bed skirt is another great addition to stop cold air from getting underneath your bed and making it cold from the bottom. While the typical “curtain style” may work for some, opting for one that is a bit stiffer and made from a thicker material is the best choice. 

While it may seem like a small detail, if your bedroom is prone to drafts, it could make a little bit of difference that ends up keeping you warm throughout the night.
